Passwords - Again

It's been a while. QUITE a while, and for that I apologize. Life's been crazy busy, and I've been side-tracked with other things of randomness... But I digress...

Thanks to XKCD's comic a while back on how to generate a secure, yet memorable password, a new site dedicated to exactly that has formed. It automatically selects several words of no intrinsic meaning to each other. This helps not only with you remembering the password, but also prevents dictionary-type password attacks against whatever account you may be using it for.

How to Prevent Getting Ripped Off at the ATM Machine

Below I've linked to a must read article regarding protecting your financial assets from Debit card thieves and ATM spoofers.

So many people don't realize how vulnerable public ATM machines are to fraudulent activity... Unless the machine is in a relatively secure area (like at the actual bank) there's always a chance someone could have installed a card reader to capture your information and steal your money!

So please, do yourself a favor and read the following article. The tips listed there are invaluable and could save you a lot of time and pain.

Stop 50% of malware, viruses, spyware, and trojans with this simple trick!

LH outlines how easily malware can run on your computer simply by plugging in an infected USB device. This can be prevented however by disabling the AutoRun feature that's built into Windows.

For the more tech saavy out there (or those just willing to take risks) here's the change you can make to the Registry to disable AutoRun.

Open notepad and copy/paste the following into it:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
@="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

After pasting, safe the file as something.reg and after saving, double click the newly created file.

You will receive a prompt asking if you want to add the data to the registry, simply click yes to allow.

This hack disables any requests for the autorun.inf, which is where many virus laced USB devices store their malicious code.

My Favorite Chrome Extensions

I'm hoping most of you reading this have adopted either Firefox or Chrome as their default browser and have completely ditched Internet Explorer.

Good to Know!

Google released a 'Good to Know' site containing all sorts of security tips and tricks to help keep you safe while browsing online!

It's also got information regarding data being stored online, how it's used, etc. I highly recommending taking a peek at what information they have to offer. If you're unsure about web browsing, and continuously fear getting malware (viruses, spyware, trojans, etc), this will help you rest a little easier. Or if you're worried about hackers accessing your data, this too is a great place to get more information about how to prevent such data theft from occuring.
